Retro Pod Photo Booth Hire

Retro Pod photo booth hire (wooden tripod, wood-fascia head) for country-house weddings, rustic barns, themed parties and milestone birthdays — vintage event-décor styling, modern HD camera and 2×6 strip prints. Surrey, London and UK-wide.

  • Space Required ~1m × 2m — tripod footprint plus pose area in front
  • Chassis Wooden tripod with shield-shaped wood-fascia head — looks like vintage event décor
  • Power 1 × standard 13A socket
  • Camera Built-in HD camera with soft fill light
  • Instant 2×6 photo strips + digital sharing (QR, email, SMS, AirDrop)
  • Runs every Surrey FaceBooth experience — Glam, Magazine Cover, AI Booth, custom layouts
  • Wooden tripod + wood-fascia head — vintage event-décor styling
  • Branded overlay on every print (logo, names, monogram or hashtag)
  • Attended or unattended — your choice at booking; team member in the area either way

Guests step up to the wood-fascia head, tap start on the touchscreen, and a built-in HD camera with a soft fill light captures a sequence of frames. A 2×6 photo strip lands in the printer tray seconds later; digital copies (photo, GIF or boomerang) are shared straight to phones via QR, email, SMS or AirDrop. The whole event uploads to a branded online gallery delivered to the host afterwards.

The booth itself is part of the décor. A wooden tripod and shield-shaped wood-grain fascia ("Photo Booth — Grab a Prop & Strike a Pose") sit somewhere between a piece of vintage furniture and a modern selfie pod — works at country-house weddings, rustic barns and 80s-themed parties without looking like event kit. Guests photograph the booth as much as they pose in front of it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the retro pod and how is it different from the selfie pod?

The retro pod is a stand-up photo booth on a wooden tripod with a shield-shaped wood-grain fascia housing the camera, touchscreen and fill light. The chassis is different from the Selfie Pod (which is a slim modern tower), but the internals are the same — built-in HD camera, 2×6 photo strips, the same experience library. Pick the retro pod when you want vintage event-décor styling; pick the selfie pod when you want a slim modern look.

How much space does the retro pod need?

Around 1m × 2m total — the tripod footprint takes about the same floor area as a music stand, with the rest for guests to pose in front. No ceiling clearance issue. We fit retro pods into country-house drawing rooms, wedding barns, marquee corners, function rooms and pubs regularly.

Does the retro pod print photos?

Yes — 2×6 photo strips (four shots stacked vertically) on a dye-sublimation printer in a small flight case alongside the pod. Dye-sub means dry, smudge-proof prints ready to handle straight out of the tray. Single 6×4 prints aren't an option on this booth — every print is a strip.

Are the photos actually retro-styled?

Only if you want them to be. The fascia is retro, the software isn't. By default the pod runs the same modern overlay/branding pipeline as the selfie pod — your monogram, event name or logo on every strip. If you want a vintage-leaning look, ask at booking and we'll pre-load sepia or black-and-white filters, retro-themed frame layouts or themed overlays to match the event.

Can it do GIFs and boomerangs?

Yes — guests pick at the touchscreen. The standard mode is a still photo (which is what prints), but they can also pick GIF or boomerang for the digital share. GIFs and boomerangs are digital-only — the print is always a still.

How do guests get their photos?

Three ways at once. A 2×6 photo strip lands in the printer tray. Guests can scan a QR code on the screen to download the digital copy (plus the GIF/boomerang if they made one) to their phone, or share by email, SMS or AirDrop straight from the booth. After the event the host gets a branded online gallery of every shot from the night.

Is the retro pod attended?

Either — your call. We run hires attended (a Surrey FaceBooth team member at the booth throughout, working the queue, handling props, helping with sharing) or unattended (self-service touchscreen; a team member is in the area for the duration of your hire so we can step in if needed). The wood-fascia touchscreen is designed for guests of every age to use solo, so plenty of hires run unattended without issue; for high-traffic events, weddings where you want someone running a guest book at the booth, or any event where the photo booth is a key entertainment moment, attended is usually the right call. Tell us which you'd prefer at quote stage.

Can we add custom branding to the prints?

Yes — a branded overlay is included on every hire as standard. Send us your logo, wedding monogram, event name or hashtag at booking and it's applied to every photo strip and every digital share.

What software experiences can the retro pod run?

Almost the entire Surrey FaceBooth experience library — the Kardashian Glam Booth (high-glam black-and-white studio finish), the Newspaper & Magazine Cover Experience (guests on a custom front page), the AI Photo Booth, Elf Yourself AI, custom layouts and themed overlays all run on the same retro pod hardware. The wood-fascia exterior stays the same; you pick the on-screen look at booking. The one experience that needs different kit is the Green Screen Dream Machine, which uses a dedicated booth.

How is the retro pod different from the Vintage Photo Booth?

Both have a wooden chassis, but they're different products. The Vintage Photo Booth is a hand-finished mid-century wooden booth with a built-in Canon DSLR — sharper images, better low-light performance, shallow-depth-of-field shots that look closer to studio photography. Different price point to match. The retro pod is the friendlier option — same wood-leaning styling, the same built-in HD camera as the selfie pod, smaller footprint, lower hire cost. Pick the vintage booth when image quality is critical and the booth itself needs to look like a designer piece of furniture; pick the retro pod when you want vintage feel without the premium.

Does the retro pod work outdoors?

Yes, in sheltered conditions. The pod is rated for indoor and covered-outdoor use on a solid level surface — a marquee, gazebo or building canopy is fine; bare grass or open-sky with weather risk is not. The electronics aren't weatherproof.

How many guests can fit in a shot?

Usually 2–6 depending on how close they're willing to stand. Group capacity is set by the field of view of the built-in HD camera rather than a hard limit — bridal parties, friendship groups and family piles all fit fine with a bit of shuffling.

Can we add a custom backdrop?

Yes — backdrops are a common add-on. Floral walls, sequin walls (gold, silver, rose-gold), Memphis-style geometric prints, pop-art comic backdrops, custom-printed branded backdrops, and themed seasonal backdrops are all available. Flag the look you're after at quote stage and we'll match the décor.

Can we pair the retro pod with an audio guestbook?

Yes — popular wedding combination. The Audio Guestbook sits next to the pod (or on the side table) and guests leave a voice message after they grab their print. One booking, one delivery.

Can we have two pods at the same event?

Yes — twin-pod setups are routine at large weddings and corporate parties with 200+ guests. Two pods on the same hire doubles the throughput and halves the queue. Flag guest count at quote stage and we'll suggest whether one or two is the right call.

Are props included?

Yes — props are included as standard. The exact selection rotates depending on what's in the kit on the day. If you've got a specific theme in mind (vintage, 1920s, 80s, Christmas etc.) flag it at quote stage and we'll do our best to match.

How much does retro pod hire cost?

Pricing depends on event type, distance from our Surrey base, hire duration, and any add-ons (backdrop, twin-pod, audio guestbook). Use the instant quote builder to get a tailored figure in under a minute — drop in your date, postcode and guest count and we'll come straight back. Corporate and brand-event pricing is on a separate tier to weddings and private parties.

How far in advance should we book?

As early as you can — peak Saturday wedding dates and December corporate parties book out furthest ahead. Weekday and off-peak dates are often available with much shorter notice. Send your date and postcode through the instant quote and we'll confirm availability straight away.

Why book the Retro Pod for vintage and themed events

The booth itself is part of the décor. Country-house weddings in wood-panelled drawing rooms, rustic barns with hop-laden beams, function rooms with themed backdrops, pubs hosting milestone birthdays — the retro pod's wooden tripod and shield-shaped wood-fascia head fit the aesthetic without looking like event kit. Pose in front of it, photograph the booth itself, lean on the tripod for a candid — guests treat it like furniture more than tech. Then the modern internals deliver: 2×6 strips in seconds, instant digital share, branded overlay on everything, gallery to the host after the event.

Software experiences that run on the Retro Pod

The retro pod is hardware — the experience layered on top is configurable per event. Same pod, same delivery, you pick the look at booking:

The one experience that needs different kit is the Green Screen Dream Machine — that runs on a dedicated booth.

Space, power and venue requirements for the Retro Pod

  • ~1m × 2m total — tripod footprint plus room for guests to pose in front
  • 1 × standard 13A socket
  • Indoor, or covered outdoor on a solid level surface (marquee / gazebo / canopy — not bare open-sky)

How a Retro Pod hire runs on the day

  1. Quote and book — drop your event date, postcode and guest count into the instant quote, confirm with a deposit, and send us your logo or event name for the overlay.
  2. On the day, before guests arrive — we turn up 30–60 minutes before your event start time and have the pod set up and tested in another 30–60 minutes.
  3. Guests use the pod — they step up to the wood-fascia head, pick a filter or experience on the touchscreen, pose, props in hand, and pick up a 2×6 photo strip seconds later. On attended hires the team member at the booth keeps the queue moving and handles the props case.
  4. Digital sharing — guests scan the QR code on the screen, or send via email / SMS / AirDrop straight to a phone.
  5. After the event — we pack down and send you a branded online gallery of every shot from the night, ready to share with your guests.

Retro Pod vs Selfie Pod vs Vintage Photo Booth — which to pick

All three are open-style booths (no enclosure, no curtain) running similar software. The differences:

  • Selfie Pod — slim modern tower, same internals as the retro pod, default styling. Pick this when the event is contemporary and you don't want the booth to be part of the décor.
  • Retro Pod (this page) — wooden tripod, wood-fascia head, same HD camera and 2×6 prints as the selfie pod. Pick this when you want the booth to look the part at country-house weddings, rustic barns, themed parties.
  • Vintage Photo Booth — hand-finished mid-century wooden booth with a built-in Canon DSLR. Sharper images, better low-light, studio-style shallow-depth shots. The booth itself is a designer piece of furniture. Higher price point. Pick this when image quality is critical and the booth is the centrepiece.

Events where Retro Pod photo booth hire fits best

We cover every type of event. The Retro Pod fits in particularly well at:

  • Country-house and stately-home wedding photo booth hire — wood-panelled drawing rooms, formal dining halls and period venues where modern booth kit looks out of place. The Retro Pod's wooden tripod and wood-grain fascia sit naturally in oak-and-leather venues; same modern HD camera and 2×6 prints inside, just dressed for the room.
  • Rustic barn wedding photo booth hire — exposed beams, brick floors, hop garlands and string lights; the Retro Pod is the booth that doesn't fight the aesthetic. Pairs naturally with floral walls and Instagram-frame props for a barn or boho brief.
  • Themed parties — Gatsby, speakeasy, 70s, 80s, 90s, Mad Men, art-deco — pair the wood-fascia head with a Memphis-style, pop-art or art-deco backdrop and themed props, and pre-load sepia or black-and-white overlays at booking so the on-screen look matches the room.
  • Milestone birthday photo booth hire — 30ths through 80ths — print keepsake for older guests, GIFs and boomerangs for younger ones, branded overlay with the birthday name and date on every share. The retro-leaning chassis reads as "designed-for-the-occasion" rather than off-the-shelf event kit.
  • Pub-venue parties and function-room hires — fits where a full enclosed booth wouldn't (the tripod takes about the same floor as a music stand) and looks the part in traditional pubs, function rooms, golf clubs and members' clubs.
  • Corporate Christmas parties with a vintage, speakeasy or Gatsby brief — branded overlay on every print, sepia or black-and-white filters layered on top, themed backdrop on request. The Retro Pod is the most "occasion-dressed" booth in the fleet for traditional festive briefs.
  • Brand activations and product launches with a retro brief — wood-fascia chassis plus custom overlay and themed backdrop. Works for heritage brands, craft-drinks launches, fashion-archive activations and any retro / vintage campaign visual where modern event kit would look off-tone.
  • Hen parties, reunions and milestone celebrations — fast queue, instant prints, social-media-ready shares, and a booth that doubles as a piece of furniture in the venue photos. Themed prop kits available on request.

A retro chassis on a modern booth

The retro pod sits on three angled wooden tripod legs with a shield-shaped wood-grain fascia housing the fill light, HD camera and touchscreen. The fascia is printed wood-pattern with vintage period-style typography — "Photo Booth", "Ladies / Gents" escutcheons, "Grab a Prop & Strike a Pose / Touch to Start". A small white printer in a flight case sits alongside. Looks like a piece of vintage event décor; runs the same modern photo-booth software as our selfie pod.

Front of the retro pod's wood-fascia head — fill light at the top, 'Grab a Prop & Strike a Pose / Touch to Start' touchscreen graphic, set against a Memphis-style geometric backdrop
Wood-fascia head — "Photo Booth / Grab a Prop & Strike a Pose / Touch to Start" — in a styled-event setup.

Pairs with any backdrop or prop setup

The retro pod's wooden tripod is a freestanding piece — drop it in front of whatever backdrop your event needs (sequin walls, floral walls, branded printed backdrops, Memphis or pop-art panels, neon signs) and the booth complements rather than competes. Pairs with the standard prop kit, Instagram-style frames, themed-event props or your own custom set.
