How to Avoid Photo Booth and Other Wedding Scams

Weddings are one of the most significant and memorable days in a person’s life, but they can also be a prime target for unscrupulous businesses looking to exploit couples. Recently, there has been a rise in scams within the wedding industry, particularly involving photo booths. These trendy entertainment options have become a must-have at weddings, parties, and corporate events, but not all suppliers are reliable. It’s disheartening to see couples frantically searching for a replacement because their chosen supplier went “bust” or “disappeared”. To help you avoid such heartache, here are some key tips to protect yourself when booking a photo booth or any other wedding service.

Avoid Bank Transfers or PayPal Friends and Family Payments

While it may be tempting to save on fees, using methods like bank transfers or PayPal Friends and Family offers little to no protection if something goes wrong. Opt for a credit card payment where possible. Even paying just £100 on a credit card allows you to benefit from Section 75 protection, which can cover your entire payment, even if the remaining balance is paid in cash. Remember, PayPal’s buyer protection only lasts 180 days, so plan accordingly.

Don’t Rely Solely on Wedding Insurance

Wedding insurance is a helpful safety net, but it’s not foolproof. Some policies have clauses stating they won’t pay out until the supplier officially enters liquidation. Unfortunately, this doesn’t help if the company simply vanishes. Always read the fine print and consider wedding insurance as part of a broader protection plan, not your sole line of defence.

Clarify What’s Included in the Package

Some companies offer seemingly cheap photo booth hire but tack on exorbitant fees for extras like photos or digital copies. Ensure you have a detailed breakdown of what’s included in the package, from setup and duration to prints and digital access. Transparency is key to avoiding unpleasant surprises.

Verify the Photo Booth’s Quality

The term “photo booth” is used loosely by some suppliers. To avoid disappointment, ask for photos of the actual booth that will be at your event. Some couples have reported receiving a camera on a tripod instead of a fully enclosed or stylish booth. There is also a lot of cheaper inferior chinese products on the market. Knowing what to expect will ensure the booth meets your expectations and aligns with your event’s theme.
Here at Surrey FaceBooth we ONLY use UK manufactured top quality Photo Booths which are built for commercial purpose.

Don’t Rely Solely on Reviews

In the digital age, fake reviews are alarmingly easy to purchase. While reviews can provide some insight, they shouldn’t be your only method of vetting a supplier. Look for authentic feedback, such as tagged photos and videos on social media, or ask for references you can contact directly.

Ensure the Company Has Insurance and PAT Testing

While not a legal requirement, any legitimate photo booth business should carry Public Liability Insurance and have their equipment PAT tested. Many venues require these as a minimum standard, and their absence is a major red flag.

Research the Supplier Thoroughly

A quick search on Facebook or wedding forums can reveal discussions about the company you’re considering. Social media is often the first place dissatisfied customers voice their complaints. Checking these platforms can save you from potential scams.

Ask About Contingency Plans

Even the most reputable companies can face unexpected issues. Ask your supplier what happens if something goes wrong. A trustworthy business will have a “Plan B” in place. For instance, at our company, we’ve implemented a robust backup system to ensure no booking is left unfulfilled, even in the rare event of a cancellation.

Stay in Touch with Your Suppliers

Communication is crucial. Don’t hesitate to check in with your suppliers periodically, especially as your wedding date approaches. A quick phone call or email can provide reassurance that everything is on track.

Verify Contact Details

A legitimate business will have clear and accessible contact details, including a phone number and physical address. If you can’t find these details on their website, proceed with caution. A lack of transparency is often a red flag.

Read the Contract Carefully

Never pay a supplier who doesn’t provide a contract before booking. Review the terms and conditions thoroughly to identify any hidden clauses. This document should outline all key details, such as cancellation policies and what happens in case of disputes.

Don’t Rush Your Decision

Reputable suppliers won’t pressure you into making an immediate payment. Take the time to discuss the decision with your partner and ensure you’re comfortable before committing. High-pressure tactics are a red flag.

Trust Your Instincts

Finally, always trust your gut. If something feels off or a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Remember, in the wedding industry, you often get what you pay for. Quality and experience come at a price, but they’re worth it to ensure your day is as special as you’ve dreamed.

By taking these precautions, you can minimise the risk of being scammed and focus on enjoying your big day with peace of mind. Weddings should be about love and celebration, not stress and uncertainty.
